Zombies more popular than Peppa Pig - 3rd Oct 2014

Picture
It was fright night for student shoppers in Wrexham.

Six zombies "invaded" the town's Eagles Meadow shopping centre to help launch a student event. Hundreds of students and horror fans enjoyed the spectacle as the living dead dropped in for a spot of late night shopping.

The zombies were at the Student Take Over event courtesy of Brett Jones, 21, a second year theatre and performance student at Glyndwr University.
According to Brett, the event was a lot of fun and he was amazed at huge turn-out.
As part of the event, shops such as H&M, River Island, Bank and others offered students a generous 20 per cent discount on production of their student cards.

In his spare time, Brett runs Psychotel in Chester, with friend and business partner Ollie Cook, 23.

The terrifying hotel, where people pay for the privilege of being scared witless, is based in Ye Olde King's Head. The inn has featured on TV hit series Most Haunted.  Brett said: “The Student Take Over has certainly been a lot of fun and we didn’t expect the crowds that turned up to be honest. The event was featured in the paper and has been mentioned on the radio and I think social media has gone into overdrive.  “The actors who played the zombies, who are all students at Wrexham Glyndwr University, did a fantastic job and looked very real."

Wrexham students, Lauren Thomas, 17, and Caitlin Lawn, 16, were taken by surprise as they shopped in H&M when they saw two zombies moving toward them.  Lauren said: “They look very, very real! But it’s a good way to get students out and about and adds something a bit different to a normal shopping trip.”  Caitlin agreed adding: “It was all a bit surreal but good fun. The actors played their parts really well and their make-up was amazing. It’s great to have a bit of fun going on and good to see an event aimed at students and young people.”

H&M visual manager, Lian Proctor, says the Student Take Over event certainly brought the crowds out.  She said: “It was good to see so many people out shopping even if they were sharing the shop floor with a couple of the undead!

“It has certainly been a good event and trade has been very good. Personally, I think it’s great to have events that suit all ages and tonight has been a really good fun.”

The six zombies, Glyndwr University students, Samantha Jones, 18, of Liverpool, Tamara Bartlett, 17, of Wrexham, Alex Hardaker, 19, of Leeds, Steve Griffin, 19, of Manchester, Beth Lewis, 19, of Stoke-on-Trent, and Luke Jones, 19, of Wrexham say it had been a great event.

Luke said: “We were a bit shocked at the number of people that turned out for the event. It was amazing but really good fun.”  Tamara added: “It’s a great way to show off Wrexham to other students and for many of the shops to offer such a good discount was amazing. I know lots of students were coming down to take advantage.

“It’s great that Eagles Meadow is prepared to support students by allowing us to hold events such as this and to have a bit of harmless fun.”

Eagles Meadow Manager Kevin Critchley said: “The Student Take Over was very well supported and to be honest I think it attracted more people here than the children's favourite Peppa Pig!

"It was great seeing the shopping mall packed with shoppers and young people enjoying the occasion.  “It meant students didn’t have to travel to find discounts especially when they perhaps don’t have the biggest budget.  “There are a good range of shops at Eagles Meadow and they offered some excellent discounts on what was a really fun night for the town’s many students.”
